About BMP280 Barometric Pressure and Temperature Sensor Module.
The BMP280 is a Bosch precision barometric pressure and temperature sensor that communicates over I2C or SPI. It is a compact, low-power successor to the classic BMP180 and is extremely popular for altitude sensing, weather monitoring and drone flight controllers because of its high pressure resolution and small size.
Unlike the BME280, the BMP280 does not measure humidity; it focuses on very accurate pressure and temperature. Its fine pressure resolution allows altitude changes of well under a metre to be detected, which is why it appears in many hobby altimeters and quadcopter builds.

Buying guide
How to choose.
Choose the BMP280 when you need accurate barometric pressure and altitude but do not need humidity, for example drone flight controllers, altimeters and weather-pressure logging. If you also need humidity, step up to the BME280 (they share the same footprint and libraries family).
Check the I2C address (0x76 or 0x77) to avoid conflicts on a shared bus with other sensors. The Bosch chip is 3.3V; most breakout boards add a regulator and level shifting so they run on 3.3V or 5V, but verify your specific module before connecting to a 5V Arduino.
Pair it with an ESP32/ESP8266 for wireless weather nodes, or with a flight controller/Arduino for altitude. Use the Adafruit BMP280 library to get pressure, temperature and calculated altitude in a few lines of code.
FAQ
Common questions.
Does the BMP280 measure humidity?
No. The BMP280 measures only pressure and temperature. If you need humidity as well, choose the BME280, which is nearly identical but adds a humidity element.
How does it measure altitude?
It reads barometric pressure and, given a reference sea-level pressure, libraries compute an estimated altitude. Its fine resolution can detect altitude changes below one metre, which is why drones use it.
I2C or SPI, and how do I wire it?
Both are supported. For I2C connect VCC, GND, SDA and SCL and select address 0x76 or 0x77. For SPI use the SCK, SDI, SDO and CS lines. I2C is the most common for hobby projects.
Which library should I use?
The Adafruit BMP280 library for Arduino is the most popular; Bosch also provides an official driver. Both give pressure, temperature and calculated altitude.
Is it available in India and how do I tell it from a BME280?
Yes, it is widely stocked in India and cheaper than the BME280. Physically the boards look similar; the BMP280 chip is smaller and the board will not report humidity. Buy from a trusted seller to be sure of what you receive.
