Overview

About DHT22 / AM2302 Temperature and Humidity Sensor Module.

The DHT22, also sold as the AM2302, is a higher-accuracy digital temperature and humidity sensor and the natural upgrade from the DHT11. Like the DHT11 it uses a single-wire digital interface, but it offers a much wider measurement range and significantly better precision, making it suitable for real weather stations and outdoor monitoring.

It reads temperature from -40 to 80C and relative humidity across the full 0 to 100% RH range, with roughly +/-0.5C temperature accuracy and +/-2-5% RH humidity accuracy. The module includes the onboard pull-up resistor, so wiring stays as simple as VCC, DATA and GND.

For Indian makers building serious IoT weather nodes, cold-storage monitors or agricultural sensors, the DHT22 hits the sweet spot: far more accurate than the DHT11 while remaining cheap, single-wire and supported by the same familiar Arduino libraries.

Buying guide

How to choose.

Choose the DHT22/AM2302 when you need real accuracy, sub-zero temperatures, or the full humidity range, for example an outdoor weather station, a cold-storage alarm or an agricultural sensor. If you only need approximate indoor readings for learning, the cheaper DHT11 is enough.

It is a drop-in upgrade: the wiring and libraries are the same as the DHT11, so you only change the sensor type in your code. Use the 3-pin module version so the pull-up resistor is already fitted. Pair it with an ESP32 or ESP8266 for Wi-Fi logging, or an Arduino for standalone loggers.

If you also need barometric pressure or altitude, consider the BME280 instead, which adds pressure over I2C. For the fastest, simplest accurate temperature/humidity node, the DHT22 remains the standard pick.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is the DHT22 the same as the AM2302?

Yes. AM2302 is the wired/module version of the same sensor. Electrically and in code they are treated identically (sensor type DHT22).

Can I reuse my DHT11 wiring and code?

Yes. The DHT22 uses the same single-wire interface and pinout. Just connect VCC, DATA and GND, and change the sensor type to DHT22 in the Adafruit DHT or DHTlib library.

How often can I read it?

The DHT22 samples about once every 2 seconds (0.5 Hz), so read it no faster than that. Reading too quickly returns the previous or failed value.

Does it measure negative temperatures?

Yes, it measures down to -40C, unlike the DHT11 which starts at 0C. This makes it suitable for cold-storage and outdoor winter monitoring.

Is it available in India and what comes in the box?

Yes, the DHT22/AM2302 is widely stocked in India. You typically receive one DHT22 module (3-pin blue PCB with onboard pull-up) or the AM2302 with a short cable; jumper wires are usually separate.
