The BME280 is a Bosch 3-in-1 environmental sensor that measures temperature, relative humidity and barometric pressure in a single tiny package, communicating over both I2C and SPI. How to choose.

Pick the BME280 when you need accurate temperature, humidity and barometric pressure together, or when you want altitude estimation. It is the right upgrade from a DHT22 for weather stations, drones and precision indoor monitoring. If you do not need humidity, the cheaper BMP280 measures only pressure and temperature.

Confirm you are buying a genuine BME280 (humidity-capable), because many low-cost boards are actually BMP280. Check the I2C address (0x76 or 0x77) so it does not clash with other sensors on the bus. Most breakout boards support both 3.3V and 5V, but the bare chip is 3.3V, so use a board with level shifting for 5V Arduinos.

Pair it with an ESP32/ESP8266 for Wi-Fi weather nodes, or a Raspberry Pi/Arduino with the Adafruit BME280 library. For gas/air-quality sensing as well, look at the BME680.

Common questions.

What is the difference between BME280 and BMP280?

The BME280 measures temperature, humidity and pressure. The BMP280 measures only temperature and pressure (no humidity). Many cheap boards labelled BME280 are actually BMP280, so verify with the seller.

Does it use I2C or SPI?

Both. Most projects use I2C (address 0x76 or 0x77) because it needs only two data wires. SPI is available for higher speed or to avoid address conflicts.

Can it measure altitude?

Yes, indirectly. By reading barometric pressure and referencing sea-level pressure, libraries calculate an estimated altitude. This is why it is popular for drones and weather projects.

Which library and wiring do I use?

The Adafruit BME280 library (Arduino) or Bosch BSEC is common. For I2C connect VCC, GND, SDA and SCL; set the I2C address to match your board (0x76 or 0x77).
