The LM2596 DC-DC buck converter is the workhorse adjustable step-down regulator of the maker world. How to choose.
Choose the LM2596 when you need an inexpensive, reliable adjustable step-down and your load is up to about 2-3A. Always set the output voltage with a multimeter on the trimmer before connecting your circuit, because the pot has many turns and the output can start high.
The output must always be lower than the input (this is a buck-only converter, it cannot boost). If your source can drop below your target output, for example a LiPo sagging under load, choose a boost (MT3608) or buck-boost (XL6009) module instead. For sustained loads above ~1.5A add a heatsink or pick the higher-current XL4015.
Pair it with a multimeter for setting the voltage, and screw terminals or a barrel jack for tidy input/output connections.

Can it output 5V from a 12V input?
Yes, that is one of its most common uses. Feed 12V in, turn the trimmer while measuring with a multimeter until you read 5.0V out, then connect your load. It handles 3.3V, 5V, 9V and other targets the same way.
Can it step voltage up?
No. The LM2596 is a buck (step-down) converter only. The output is always lower than the input. For stepping up use an MT3608 boost or an XL6009 buck-boost module.
How do I set the output voltage?
Turn the small multi-turn brass screw on the blue potentiometer while measuring the output with a multimeter. It takes several turns; set the voltage before connecting your sensitive circuit.
Do I need a heatsink?
For light loads no. For continuous currents above roughly 1.5-2A the IC gets warm, so a small heatsink and airflow are recommended. For heavier steady loads consider the XL4015 5A module.
