The MAX7219 8x8 LED Dot Matrix Display Module (4-in-1) is four 8x8 red LED matrices cascaded into a single 32x8 pixel display, driven by the well-known MAX7219 LED driver over SPI. Each matrix is controlled by its own MAX7219, and the boards are chained so a scrolling message can flow across all four panels - which is why this is the classic choice for DIY scrolling-text signs and marquee clocks.

The MAX7219 handles all the multiplexing, brightness control and refresh for the LEDs, so your microcontroller just sends data over three SPI lines (DIN, CLK, CS) plus power.
