Overview

About SimonK 30A BLDC ESC.

The SimonK 30A BLDC ESC is an entry-level electronic speed controller for brushless DC motors, flashed with the open-source SimonK firmware that improves throttle response and refresh rate compared to older stock firmware. It converts the steady DC voltage from a 2-3S LiPo battery into the three-phase AC waveform a brushless motor needs, switching power MOSFETs in time with the motor's rotation to control speed smoothly. A standard PWM signal from the flight controller or receiver sets the throttle level.

It carries a continuous rating of 30A with short bursts up to 40A, and includes a built-in 5V/2A linear BEC that can power a flight controller, receiver and small servos. SimonK firmware raises the signal refresh rate up to around 490Hz, which is why this board became a long-standing favourite for budget quadcopters and multirotors running 1000-2200kV motors such as the popular A2212 series.

This ESC is best suited to hobbyists, students and DIY builders assembling their first 250-450mm quadcopter, trainer-class fixed-wing model or robotics project on a tight budget. It is not a modern digital-protocol racing ESC, so experienced FPV pilots wanting DShot will look elsewhere, but for learning, education kits and general RC propulsion it remains a reliable, low-cost workhorse.

Buying guide

How to choose.

Match the ESC rating to your motor's maximum current with headroom: the 30A SimonK is well-paired with 1000-2200kV motors on 2-3S running 5-10 inch props, typical of 250-450 class quads. If your motor and prop combination can draw more than about 25A continuous, step up to a 40A unit instead so the ESC runs cool and lasts.

Confirm your power needs before relying on the BEC. The 5V/2A linear regulator is fine for a flight controller and receiver, but if you plan to run several digital servos or a gimbal you should add a separate BEC or use an OPTO ESC with external power. Also note this is a 2-3S board only, so it is not suitable for 4S or higher packs.

Choose SimonK only if you are happy with analog PWM throttle. For modern FPV pilots who want DShot digital protocols, telemetry or 4S/6S support, a BLHeli_S or BLHeli_32 ESC is a better long-term choice. For learning, repairs and low-cost builds, however, the SimonK 30A remains excellent value in India.

FAQ

Common questions.

What battery can I use with the SimonK 30A ESC?

It is designed for 2-3S LiPo packs, roughly 7.4V to 11.1V. Do not connect 4S or higher batteries, as the input capacitor and MOSFET ratings are not rated for those voltages and you risk damaging the ESC or causing a fire.

Does it have a built-in BEC?

Yes. It provides a 5V/2A linear BEC that can power your flight controller, receiver and a couple of small servos. For heavier loads such as multiple digital servos or a camera gimbal, use a dedicated external BEC to avoid voltage drop or overheating.

Is SimonK firmware better than the stock firmware?

For multirotors, generally yes. SimonK raises the refresh rate and tightens throttle response, which makes hovering and PID tuning easier. It does not, however, support modern digital protocols like DShot, so it is an analog-PWM solution rather than a current-generation racing ESC.

What motors work well with this ESC?

It pairs well with common 2212-class brushless motors in the 1000-2200kV range on 2-3S, the kind used in 250-450mm quadcopters and trainer planes. Always check that your motor's peak current draw stays below the 30A continuous rating with your chosen propeller.

Does it need calibration?

Yes. Like most PWM ESCs, you should calibrate the throttle endpoints with your transmitter or flight controller on first use so minimum and maximum throttle line up correctly. This ensures all motors arm together and respond consistently across the throttle range.

Can I use it for robotics instead of a drone?

Yes, it can drive a brushless motor in robotics or ground-vehicle projects, but remember it expects an RC-style PWM signal and is unidirectional by default. For reversible or precise closed-loop control you may need different firmware or a dedicated robotics motor driver.
