Overview

About Holybro X500 V2 ARF Kit (PX4 dev platform).

The Holybro X500 V2 ARF kit is a 500mm carbon fiber quadcopter platform that is one of the most widely used reference airframes for PX4 and ArduPilot development. The Almost-Ready-to-Fly kit comes with the motors, ESCs, propellers and power distribution board pre-installed, so a builder only needs to add a flight controller, GPS, receiver and battery to have a flying research and development drone in roughly fifteen minutes. Its clean, well-documented design makes it the platform many PX4 tutorials and courses are written around.

The airframe pairs a 144x144mm, 2mm carbon fiber main body with 16mm carbon tube arms held by fiber-reinforced nylon connectors, keeping the frame light at about 610g while staying rigid. The ARF version is equipped with four Holybro 2216 920KV motors, four 20A BLHeli_S ESCs, 1045 propellers and a PDB with an XT60 battery input and XT30 peripheral connectors. With 215mm landing-gear height and around 28mm between plates, there is room for a Pixhawk-class autopilot, companion computer and sensors.

It is aimed at researchers, university labs and students learning PX4/ArduPilot, drone developers prototyping autonomy and computer vision, and educators who need a reliable, repeatable platform. Its strong documentation and parts support make it ideal for teaching and serious R&D rather than aggressive flying.

Buying guide

How to choose.

The X500 V2 ARF kit already includes the motors, ESCs, propellers and PDB, so you only need to add a flight controller (such as a Holybro Pixhawk), a GPS, an RC receiver and a battery to complete the build. This makes it one of the fastest ways to get a documented PX4/ArduPilot development platform in the air.

Choose the ARF version if you want a proven reference airframe for research or teaching rather than a custom-tuned performance quad. Its strong documentation, companion-computer space and ~1500g payload margin suit autonomy, computer vision and sensor-integration projects. If you already own motors and ESCs, Holybro also sells a frame-only kit.

Plan power and payload around your project: the 2216 920KV motors and 1045 props are tuned for a typical 4S setup, and the 215mm landing gear plus 28mm plate gap leave room for a Pixhawk, GPS, telemetry and a companion computer such as a Jetson or Raspberry Pi. Keep added payload within the stated thrust margin for stable, efficient flight.

FAQ

Common questions.

What does the X500 V2 ARF kit include?

The ARF (Almost-Ready-to-Fly) kit includes the carbon frame with four Holybro 2216 920KV motors, four 20A BLHeli_S ESCs, 1045 propellers and a power distribution board, pre-installed. It does not include the flight controller, GPS, RC receiver or battery, which you add to finish the build.

What flight controller works with it?

The X500 V2 is the reference platform for Holybro Pixhawk-series controllers and works with PX4 and ArduPilot. Common choices include Pixhawk 6C/6X and similar boards. The deck has standard mounting space and the documentation is written around Pixhawk-class autopilots.

Why is the X500 V2 popular for development?

It is light, well documented and used in many PX4 and ArduPilot tutorials, so beginners and researchers can follow established guides. The clean layout leaves room for a companion computer and sensors, making it ideal for autonomy, computer vision and academic drone projects.

How much payload can it carry?

Holybro states a maximum payload of about 1500g without battery at around 70% throttle. In practice you should keep total added weight comfortably within the motors' thrust margin to maintain stable, efficient flight and reasonable flight time, especially with a companion computer aboard.

Can I mount a companion computer like a Jetson or Raspberry Pi?

Yes. The 144x144mm deck, ~28mm plate gap and 215mm landing-gear height leave room for a Pixhawk autopilot plus a companion computer such as a Jetson or Raspberry Pi and sensors, which is exactly why the X500 V2 is favoured for autonomy and computer-vision research.

How long does assembly take?

Because the ARF kit ships with motors, ESCs, props and PDB pre-installed, Holybro states assembly takes around 15 minutes. You mainly mount and wire the flight controller, GPS and receiver, and fit a battery, which is much faster than building from a bare frame.
